Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to contest certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
