British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
